I was so nervous when we first got our dog. I had never had to potty train a puppy before. We had also enrolled in a puppy training class, so I asked the instructor if he had any potty training tips. What worked best was allot of work, but with great results.

First you need a crate. Your dog crate should be just big enough for your dog to turn around in. You don’t want allot of play room in the crate to avoid any indoor urination or poops. Believe it or not a crate sounds like a rough treatment, but is really good for a new puppy or to have a new dog adjust t your home. Always remove your dogs collar before putting them in the crate as well.

You will want to take the dog out every two hours in the beginning, and to the same spot outside. They may not always have to go but you are showing them that when they have to go the spot is outside. When they do their business, reward them with pleasantries and if you want a treat. This technique works really well but, especially with a puppy there may still be a few indoor accidents. Simply say “no” and bring your dog outside to the potty spot.

Don’t get angry with your dog though. This is a learning experience and you will be surprised how quickly they pick it up. Slowly as the dog shows that they understand that outside means potty and inside means no potty you can increase the time in between outings. Your dog will let you know when they have to go. Now that they have the ritual down you should make sure that your dog understands the “sit” and “wait” command. This way they can sit while you put on their leash and wait until you are ready for them to exit the door. This will avoid any bolting out the door as soon as it opens temptations your dog might have.

If you have an enclosed yard you will still want to use these methods in the beginning just so the dog understands. As the dog matures and follows your commands it will be ok to let them out in the yard with out the leash to do their business. Even if you are just letting the dog out to run and play, like a child you should always keep an eye on them. They are very smart and if they want to get out of a fence they sometimes can.
