“A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children.” – Audubon
In simple words, conservation is said to be the planned management of natural resources. But the deep meaning of the term involves much more than just the economics. It deals with how we can pass the natural beauty of our planet to the next generation. It also includes protecting our wildlife and other creature and preserving even the species that are progressing towards getting extinct.
It is very important to maintain a perfect balance among all living creatures for everyone’s survival. Any specie can undergo problems and even reach the stages of getting extinct if there is poor land management or wildlife management. Everyone with little knowledge of ecology is aware that a domino effect is caused if such a situation arises. The food chains get disturbed, even the water resources get pollutes and the nutrients of soil get destroyed. The forests also start vanishing. The Americans realized the importance of conservation with the help of two books published in the year 1864. These books were really eye openers for many. They were the ‘Walden’ by Henry David Thoreau, dealing with the values of nature in nourishing a man’s spirits. And ‘Man And Nature’ by George Perkins Marsh was geared towards letting people realize how they are harming their beautiful nature.
Teddy Roosevelt came into picture around 40 years later. He played a very significant role in conservation. During his term, he got the U.S. National Park System enlarged and worked towards the establishment of U.S. Forest Service too. We will not be doing justice if we don’t mention another prominent supporter of the cause, John Muir. He was the founder of Sierra Club and was very actively involved in making people aware of the importance of conservation. He even went with Roosevelt to Yosemite in 1903. This trip convinced Roosevelt that lands like those needed protection that can be done with federal control and management.
The country faces other problems besides Conservation. The development has caused damage to the protected parts of the world also where more than the three-fourth of the world’s species live. Poor management has also led to its deterioration. The famous conservationist, Dr. Kenton Miller encourages making more park rangers in order to make survival in these areas better. He says that the park rangers work in the forefront together with many others like the scientists, the visitors, and member of local communities, and they are going to play a prominent role in designing the future of our ecosystem and our heritage.
Adopt A Ranger is one organization that helps in financing the salaries of park rangers. This has helped in trying to resolve the shortage of park rangers throughout the world. These park rangers are a big help in management of national parks, nature reserves and also the protected areas. Because of the deficiency in number of park rangers, it is believed that around 75% of the world is suffering due to lack of protecting nature. With the help of this organization and some others like this, many people throughout the world and many countries are realizing the importance of conservation and are willing to provide support.
Thanks to the influence of early pioneers like John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt in protecting natural resources in America, and the work of organizations like the Sierra Club and the National Audubon Society, public awareness has grown to the point that now hundreds of young people each year choose to enter this important career field. There are a number of career options students can choose from, including park ranger, wildlife handler, horticultural aide, forestry technician, conservation educator, marine life aquarium worker, zoological society specialist, and museum specialist.
